FOR STUDENTS

CEDA at a glance

  • Hey! Come and teach in a local Cambodian primary school. You’ll teach with a high school buddy, so you’re never on your own. A cool teacher will prep you with the ins and outs, and before you know it, you’ll be in front of a class!
  • You’ll meet some great high school buddy-teachers from around the world, and build your leadership skills on a week-long trip. After school, we get to hang out by the pool, ice skating or just chill with some new friends.
  • Also, you’ll get service hour credits (if you need ‘em). But I go back every summer to see my friends, help teach some local kids, and get better at leading a class.

What’s a CEDA week like?

  • Arrive in Phnom Penh on Sunday. Settle into the hotel and meet your fellow teaching buddies. Get to know your trip buddies by the pool, and go over the rules and safety for the week. Chill!
  • Monday morning, after breakfast we take a shuttle bus to school and a quick tour to familiarize ourselves with the layout. Then our trip teachers take us through the basics of lesson planning, managing little kids in a classroom, and how to run some learning games to make it fun for them.
  • Then we meet the class, and their teacher. We spend some time preparing for Tuesday, asking questions about what we need to cover during the week, and we meet the kids.
  • Tuesday morning it’s ON! The day goes by so fast, like a blur! It’s funny to walk in, say “Good morning class” and have the little kids reply “good morning teacher”. Reminded me of when I was in the 3rd grade! We play games, we go over addition and subtraction. And we ask the kids to write on the whiteboard the future and past tenses of English words we call out.
  • We takes turns with our teaching-buddy, so while one of us is teaching up front, the other is kneeling beside a student, helping them one-on-one with something. It’s really cool.
  • By the time Friday comes around, we’re old buddies: managing the “temperature” of the classroom, seeing the little kids light up when we play a final boys v girls grammar game, and doing a final math quiz.
  • We farewell Cambodia by a chill river cruise, where we talk about our week, the amazing kids we taught, and exchange contact details ahead of next year’s trip!

You’ve got questions: we’ve got answers…

I’ve never done anything like this before. Can I apply?

Sure! We want you if you’re willing to learn new things, have a positive attitude, and are outgoing.

Can I come with my friends?

It doesn’t matter if you come with some friends, or fly solo: either way, you’ll leave with new and old friends!

So, I’m like, teaching English? To primary school kids?

Sort of – you’ll be teaching IN English! You’ll be teaching math, geography, English, history, etc IN English, not just English!

What do I need to bring?

An enthusiastic attitude, a passion to learn new things, and a desire to bring out the leader in you! (We’ll also send your parents a list of stuff to bring.)

I’m taking the International Baccalaureate. Will this count towards my community service?

Definitely. It also looks impressive on your college application.

Is there Internet in Cambodia?

Yes, there’s internet in Cambodia so you can keep in touch, and share your experience with your friends and parents (you’ll need their permission to join the trip)

You will be expected to deliver lessons across a range of subjects to primary school aged students, who have varying levels of English speaking and writing capability. You may be teaching lessons on Math, Science, English, Arts and Crafts or Geography. By showing initiative and enthusiasm, the options are endless and any suggestions you have will be welcomed.

Your teacher will support you through on-going in-classroom and drop-in support, observations, and one on one feedback.
