FOR PARENTS

CEDA at a glance

  • High-school students teach in pairs in a local Khmer and English bilingual primary school for a week. Our programs are aligned with major high school semesters and Summer break holidays.
  • Students typically travel in teams of 8 to 12, with a CEDA program leader (an experienced qualified teacher) and a chaperone (usually a parent).
  • Students are supported by their program leader and participate in Monday training and undertake planning sessions prior to teaching in the classroom from Tuesday to Friday.

The CEDA program

  • CEDA trips run Sunday to Saturday. Students land into Phnom Penh and are met at the airport. A shuttle transfers guests to the 4-star hotel.
  • Monday is orientation and training day at the school.
  • Tuesday to Wednesday is in-class teaching from 8am to 1pm. After lunch at the hotel, students reflect, and prepare the next day’s lessons.
  • Late in the afternoon, a local activity may be undertaken: ice-skating, science activity centre, a local market visit. Note that we do not visit the Killing Fields.
  • Friday night is (weather permitting) a river cruise on the Tong Le river, before Saturday transfers to the airport.

Why choose a CEDA program?

  • Responsible projects – we are dedicated to ensuring that our projects are responsibly run and have sustainable positive impacts that are supporting local students and school communities.
  • Superior support – your experienced CEDA program leader, along with our local team in Cambodia will ensure students are supported every step of the way – from professional training, to planning lessons and classroom management techniques.
  • Rewarding Experience – our programs are designed to make the most of a short time abroad while developing leadership skills and cultural awareness.
  • Safety-first – the safety of our program participants is a top priority for CEDA and we have clear protocols for risk management of our programs. All trips are fully insured with a global insurer, and include medical evacuation benefits.
  • New friendships – while on our teaching programs, students meet other like-minded students from around the world and interact with friendly program support staff and local Cambodian staff and students.
  • Global Citizenship and Intercultural Skills – by immersing in unfamiliar practices and customs, students will be better equipped to identify and interact with people from other countries and backgrounds.

You’ve got questions: we’ve got answers…

Can I travel with my child?

Yes, you’re welcome to travel with your child and there will be accommodation options available for parents of students participating in the program. We can also arrange brief visits to the school where they are teaching. (There are also opportunities for parents who would like to volunteer to be a group chaperone, which does include a wider range of responsibilities. Please contact us if you would like more information).

If I don’t travel with my child, who will look after them?

The program operates to Western-standard “away camp” guidelines, and the program leader and chaperone have responsibility for your child. CEDA operates under international school, and insurer-approved, risk management protocols. Trips are fully insured, with medical evacuation provisions, and Western-operated medical clinics used locally for minor incidents.

How can I contact my child during the trip?

You will be provided with contact information for CEDA staff and the hotel where your child is staying, as well as emergency contact numbers. Wifi is available at the hotel for your child to use.

What if my child wants to come home early?

Whilst we’ve never had this happen in our programs, and all children have enjoyed their experience so far, in the unlikely case of this happening we would contact you to discuss your child’s preference for early return. This would be arranged on a case by case basis. Please see all terms and conditions for early leave from the program.

My child doesn’t like spicy food, or has special dietary needs. What will they eat?

All meal options have western options. As part of the trip acceptance process, you will complete information forms about dietary needs and any allergies or medical conditions. The program leader and chaperone will be briefed before the trip to ensure that your child’s needs are looked after.

What if my child gets sick?

In the unlikely event your child becomes ill, they will be cared for by locally-based western doctors. We have western doctors available for consultation, and any treatments and ambulances and western hospitals are available if needed.

Is my child suitable for a CEDA trip?

A CEDA trip isn’t suitable for all students. Students need to demonstrate a certain levels of maturity for their age, in order to be suitable for a week’s teaching. Additionally, all participants must have a native, or near-native, command of English.

TRAINING DAY AND TEACHING IN OUR PROGRAM:

Students will be taught and guided through the basic principles of effective teaching by an experienced, qualified teacher from an International school. Components of this training will include:

  • – Safety within the classroom
  • – Effective lesson planning and delivery
  • – How to engage and support your students
  • – Time to plan with your teaching partner

Students will have some basic tasks to complete prior to arriving in Cambodia, such as some brief readings and observation of a lesson at their current school. This will ensure students arrive feeling confident and supported to be able to deliver lessons.

Student teachers will be provided with a structured lesson template to work within and a range of resources to support their classes. They will be expected to deliver lessons across a range of subjects to primary school aged students, who have varying levels of English speaking and writing capability. They may be teaching lessons on Math, Science, English, Arts and Crafts or Geography.

Your teacher will support you through on-going in-classroom and drop-in support, observations, and one on one feedback. They will be available throughout the trip and can draw on their experience as a qualified teacher from an International school to ensure you feel comfortable and efficient in the classroom.
